Earlier this fall, Affinaquest was invited to travel to South Florida and participate in a special opportunity to be featured on the award-winning documentary series, Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid. Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes when a documentary is in the making?
Let’s pull back the curtain as Steve Hank, Executive Vice President for Collegiate Athletics at Affinaquest, joined by Dan Stahl, Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation and Business Intelligence at University of South Carolina, and Patrick Nowlin, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Business Innovation and Revenue Generation at University of Notre Dame, traveled south for filming. From insightful interviews to impromptu discussions, here’s a glimpse into an action-packed trip.
Day One: Arrival
The team touched down in sunny Florida, taking advantage of early arrival to spend time catching up, talking about the latest events on campus and hot topics of the season. Over a table of steak and seafood, the group shared holiday plans, projects coming up in their departments, and prepared for an exciting day ahead.
Day Two: Lights, Camera, Action

The cameras start rolling as Steve Hank took center stage, discussing the profound impact of Affinaquest solutions for collegiate athletics clients across the country. Sharing topics discussed daily with industry colleagues and professionals, Steve captivated the room with insights and strategies that continue to support athletic departments navigating tumultuous change with ambitious revenue goals.

Following a break in filming where music played in the background and the team compared their favorite bands, it was Patrick’s turn to step into the spotlight. Leading strategies and growth at Notre Dame, arguably the most tradition-laden program in the country, Patrick shared how his staff balance art and science on campus. Driven by data, Notre Dame uses innovative strategies to engage their expansive fan base while maintaining the history and legacy of its programs.

After another break, Dan began filming his segment. Coming from a competitive SEC program at South Carolina, Dan shared strategies behind the impactful revenue growth he had overseen in recent years. In a conference with some of the most passionate fans and competitive teams, Dan’s staff has used data to discover thousands of hidden fans that they hadn’t previously reached, generating more than $2 million in incremental revenue growth.
2:00 p.m.
With individual segments completed, the team returned to more familiar, everyday attire – polos and slacks. As happens naturally within athletic departments, the videographers captured candid interactions between Steve, Dan, and Patrick, showcasing the collaborative spirit of Affinaquest with its clients.
3:00 p.m.
The team wrapped on filming, celebrating a successful and energetic day in the studio. The trip concluded with more time spent along the beach, discussing plans on campus in 2024, upcoming conferences and events, and new opportunities for the team to continue to work together.
It was a trip filled with collaboration, dedication, and achievement, sharing industry insights and building upon longstanding connections. Stay tuned to see the final product and watch the release of the documentary.
